We arrived on the scene, set up our table next to a super friendly UCI team, propped up our poster, and started nibbling on some refreshments. We practiced our demo a few times, walked around to check out the competition, and tried to repress our glimmering hopes of victory. The food was amazing. UCI really beats Chapman in that department. Several of the other apps were impressive. As per usual, we quipped things like, "We're not here just to win".. "We'll be totally fine".. "What do we have to lose?" in an effort to ease our nerves.
We certainly did not expect to win two awards. When we won the first one, "The Most Surprising App" (what does that even mean?) it was so exciting. Aneesha took the mic and gracefully expressed our surprise and thanks. Beaming, we accepted our lovely Starcraft and World of Warcraft packs and inflatable R2D2s with glee. We won an award! Our hard work has been validated! Now we can go off and be WoW addicts!
Ten minutes later, they called us up again for the People's Choice Award. I distinctly remember being so surprised that I turned around and realized I was in front of a bunch of clapping people and I wasn't smiling. Then they passed me the mic and I said words, I think. In addition to the Google swag, we had also won a lunch at Google! Whhhaaaat. Best. Day. Ever.
But the most rewarding part of this experience was being able to show people our work. Not just the judges, but fellow app developers, other students, and all of the wonderful attendees that stopped by our table to ask questions and give us great ideas for improving Smart Dresser. We had an absolute blast and could not be more grateful. Thank you to UCI, Dr. Fahy, and everyone who made this opportunity possible! Thanks to Prof. Erik Linstead, who gave us the inspiration and encouragement to make Smart Dresser a reality and continues to support us in our future endeavors!
Keep reading the blog for future advancements and adventures (cuz I'm pretty sure Aneesha's gonna make this her thesis...) Thanks to everyone for all the support!
Team Smart Dresser 4EVER.
